Fire or immediate danger? Call 999 first.
If there is fire, smoke, or anyone is in immediate danger, call 999 before calling an electrician. If it is safe to do so, you can switch off the main switch on your consumer unit to cut the power – but never touch anything that is burnt, wet or sparking.
Urgent symptoms
Call straight away if you have…
- Burning smell, scorch marks or heat from a socket, switch or consumer unit
- Complete loss of power to all or part of the property
- A breaker or RCD that trips instantly and will not stay reset
- Buzzing, crackling or arcing sounds from fittings or the fuseboard
- Electric shocks or tingling from taps, appliances or metalwork
- Exposed live conductors or damaged cables
- Water ingress reaching sockets, lights or the consumer unit
